What Is Self-Care Exactly

The concept of self-care can seem self-centered, egocentric, self-absorbed, self-serving, narcissistic, inconsiderate, and just plain selfish.

I can assure you it is NOT! Self-care simply refers to the intentional practice of taking care of one's physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.

Sometimes we can get so caught up in others that we fail to love and nurture ourselves. Self-care has to be a conscious decision and a lifelong commitment.

It involves engaging in activities and behaviors that promote self-love, self-nurturing, self-compassion, and self-fulfillment.

Self-care encompasses various aspects of our lives, including our spiritual, and physical health, emotional well-being, relationships, and personal development.

Self-care can look different for everyone, and it is not just an idea for women. It includes men, seniors, and even children. We often learn at an early age to be helpful to others.

The idea of helping others is engrained in us. Our parents tell us to look after our little brothers and sisters. Young men learn lessons like “ladies first” and “go help your mother”. We all were taught to mind our manners and be respectful to our elders.

These harmless sentiments are all in the name of love and respect and teaching young people how to do the right thing.

However, these same sentiments can lead to a lifelong pattern of putting other people's needs before our own.

Taking care of people who really should be taking care of themselves and giving respect to others when it's not earned or deserved.

Let me give a disclaimer. I am not a therapist or a mental health professional. I actually have a Masters degree in Business.

However, I've been guilty of neglecting myself and running myself into the ground trying to make other people happy. It took a lot of hard knocks for me to finally realize that it is impossible to make everyone happy.

It also took me a while to realize that some people will never be happy. Once I discovered this truth, I decided to put myself first and truly love and nurture myself.

Self-care doesn't mean that you don't help people. It simply means that you don't help people and neglect yourself.

Self-care involves identifying your needs and wants and prioritizing activities that restore and rejuvenate you.

This could include activities such as getting enough sleep, maintaining a healthy diet, engaging in regular exercise, practicing mindfulness or meditation, spending time with loved ones, pursuing hobbies, setting boundaries, seeking support when needed, and practicing self-reflection and self-care rituals.

The goal of self-care is to cultivate a healthy and balanced lifestyle that supports your overall well-being. It is about recognizing and honoring your own needs, while also managing anxiety and stress.

By investing in self-care, you can enhance your physical health, improve your emotional resilience, boost your productivity, and foster a greater sense of fulfillment and happiness in your life.

The Significance of Self-Care for Your Well-being

Self-care is of great significance. We can often fall into the trap of becoming hyper-focused on one area of ourselves so much that we begin to neglect other areas.

I remember a season in my own life when I was totally focused on my mental health. I was dealing with a significant loss and I was determined to work through it and become mentally strong again.

What I failed to realize was how my physical health was being neglected. Because I was not in a good head space, I did not want to work out or eat well. So when I finally gathered myself mentally, I found that I was over 30 pounds overweight.

That's when I realized that we must maintain balance on this journey of self-care. It's important to take care of every aspect of our lives.

By recognizing the interconnectedness of these factors, we can create a comprehensive self-care approach that caters to each person's specific needs and ensures optimal health.

Prioritizing self-care is vital for maintaining good health

We can improve our well-being by caring for ourselves physically, mentally and spiritually. Engaging in self-care practices helps to reduce stress, promote relaxation, and enhance personal growth.

Setting aside time regularly to engage in activities that bring you joy are essential. It's also important to get proper rest and set aside time to simply kick back and relax. By putting these actions into practice will improve your overall quality of life and wellness.

Make Everyday Life Less Stressful

Engaging in self-care practices can significantly eliminate anxiety and reduce stress in your life. By prioritizing your spiritual, physical and mental well-being, you create a foundation of resilience that helps you better cope with daily challenges.

Taking time for activities such as exercise, meditation, or hobbies allows you to recharge, release tension, and improve your overall mood. Also setting boundaries and learning to say no when necessary helps manage stress and prevent burnout.

The 3 Parts Of You

We as humans are made up of 3 parts. We are spirit beings, who live in a body and we possess a soul. Our soul houses our emotions and all 3 parts of us need love and nurturing.

Apart from our mind, body spirit connection, there are 9 additional areas that require our attention. I have created and embraced "The 12 Building Blocks of Self-Care."

These 12 aspects of life, when effectively managed, can provide the happiness and serenity we deeply yearn for. They serve as the foundation for prioritizing self-love and comprehensive care.

The Different Types of Self-Care

In order to prioritize our well-being through self-care, it is vital to take into account multiple facets and customize our practices accordingly.

It is important to acquaint ourselves with different types of self-care that are crucial for addressing our individual requirements.

The 12 Building Blocks of Self-Care act as a fundamental roadmap, empowering us to be purposeful on our self-care path. Here are the Building Blocks:

Emotional self-care

Emotional self-care is important because it helps us manage our emotions. When we focus on emotional self-care we begin to recognize and acknowledge our feelings.

By allowing ourselves to experience and accept our emotions, we create space for healing and growth. This is the first step towards emotional well-being.

In addition to acknowledging our feelings it is also important to seek support if needed. Building a solid support system is vital for our emotional well-being. Whether confiding in trusted friends or seeking professional help, reaching out to others can provide comfort and guidance during challenging times.

Accomplishing Mental Clarity

Practicing Mindfulness: Cultivating mindfulness allows us to be present in the moment and better understand our emotions.

Meditation, deep breathing exercises, or journaling can promote emotional awareness and reduce stress.

Setting Boundaries: Setting boundaries are essential for protecting our emotional well-being.

This includes saying no when needed, prioritizing self-care, and surrounding ourselves with positive influences that foster self-growth.

Engaging in Self-Compassion: Showing kindness and compassion towards oneself is crucial for emotional self-care.

Practicing self-love, forgiveness, and embracing imperfections can enhance overall well-being. This was an important lesson that I learned.

I came to the realization that I can't be everything to everybody. When I accepted this truth, I began to stop trying so hard and just be me.

Be Patent With Yourself

It is important to remember that each individual's dynamic self-care practices may vary based on personal preferences and needs.

Prioritizing emotional well-being contributes significantly to one's overall health and happiness but it is not a one-size-fits-all all approach.

Physical self-care

Physical self-care involves caring for your body to promote overall health and well-being. Regular exercise can improve cardiovascular health, build strength, and boost energy levels.

In addition to exercise, prioritizing enough sleep, and rest is crucial for providing the body with the necessary time to rejuvenate and repair itself.

Nourishing your body with a balanced diet rich in nutrient-dense foods plays a vital role in supporting overall health and promoting optimal functioning of bodily systems.

It is important to remember that physical self-care is not limited to solely focusing on appearance or fitness goals. It encompasses holistic care that considers all aspects of maintaining a healthy body.

Spiritual self-care

By prioritizing spiritual self-care, individuals can find solace, meaning, and inner balance amidst life's challenges.

It allows them to explore their beliefs and values, cultivate a sense of gratitude, find inspiration, and develop a deeper understanding of themselves and their place in the world.

Besides providing emotional support and coping mechanisms for daily stressors, spiritual self-care fosters a sense of interconnectedness with others and promotes empathy and compassion. It can help us navigate difficult times by giving us hope, resilience, and a broader perspective on life.

The importance of spiritual self-care dates back to ancient civilizations, where various religious practices were integrated into daily life.

From indigenous rituals to formalized religious ceremonies, people have long recognized the significance of tending to their spiritual needs for overall well-being.

Today, spiritual self-care continues to be an integral aspect of holistic health practices as it addresses the fundamental need for individuals to find meaning and purpose beyond physical existence.

By incorporating spiritual self-care into our lives, we can cultivate a deep sense of fulfillment and achieve optimal health and well-being.

FAQs

Will I loose relationships if I'm always thinking of myself?

Many misconceptions exist regarding self-care, such as the notion that it is selfish or indulgent. However, self-care is not selfish; it is an essential aspect of maintaining one's health and well-being. Your relationships will actually become stronger because you will be more present, happier, and more fulfilled.

My friends are always going to the spa or having brunch. These activities add up. What can I do by myself that wont cost a lot?

Another misconception is that self-care requires expensive spa treatments or luxurious vacations. Self-care can be accessible and affordable. It can encompass simple activities like reading a book or going for a walk. Become familiar with your local surroundings. Visit your local parks, museums and library's. These things can be done alone or with a friend and are often free or very inexpensive.

Temporary vs. Longevity Self-Care

implementing a self-care routine must be a commitment. You have to make it part of your lifestyle rather than a temporary approach.

A temporary approach to self-care is like a band-aid for your soul. It will work short term but eventually it will wear off.

Regarding self-care, it's essential to understand the difference between temporary and enduring practices.

Temporary self-care refers to actions that provide immediate relief or well-being but may not have a lasting impact on our overall health.

On the other hand, enduring self-care involves practices that prioritize long-term physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

Engaging in hobbies or activities that bring joy and relaxation, like reading or gardening. Nurturing social connections through virtual meetups or phone calls is a good practice.

Practice mindfulness, deep breathing, and relaxation exercises to reduce stress and promote mental clarity.
